Nnewi-South Council Boss Powers Healthcare Centres with Solar Electricity, Unveils 3-Month Development Plan

In a bold move to improve healthcare delivery and overall community development, the Executive Chairman of Nnewi-South Local Government Area, Hon. Chief Van-George Chinedu Ezeogidi, has announced the successful installation of solar-powered electricity systems across all primary healthcare centres in the council area.
Speaking during the formal unveiling of his administration’s three-month development agenda (June–August 2025), Ezeogidi said the decision to switch to solar energy was informed by the need to ensure uninterrupted 24-hour service delivery in the healthcare sector, which he noted had suffered from unreliable power supply from the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC).
“You can’t talk about efficient healthcare without steady electricity. That’s why we took the initiative to provide sustainable solar energy in all our primary healthcare centres,” he said.
Among the facilities already equipped with solar power are those in Obiofia, Odikpi (Osumenyi), Ebenato, Utuh, Umunuko, Uboma, Ezinifite, Ekwulumili, Unubi, Iseke, Obiuno, and Amichi.
But the solar initiative is just one aspect of a broader plan. The chairman also highlighted several completed and upcoming projects designed to transform the council area.
Security and Infrastructure at the Forefront
In line with the Anambra State Homeland Security Law, Ezeogidi said his administration has established Security Management and Finance Committees across communities in Nnewi-South to safeguard lives and property. He also mentioned the completion of zero-pothole asphalting projects in Amichi, Unubi, and Akwaihedi, as well as the grading of several rural roads.
Upcoming Flag-Offs and Commissionings
The council’s development blueprint for the next three months includes:
- Flag-off of solar-powered boreholes in Osumenyi, Utuh, and other communities
- Commissioning of 30 new open stores at Orie-Nwankwo Market
- Commissioning of rehabilitated boreholes at Ebenato Civic Centre and market square
- Full furnishing and equipping of the Nnewi-South LG Secretariat in Ukpor
- Inspection of the ongoing erosion control project in Utuh and renovation of Ukpor Police Station
Women Empowerment, Health Outreach & Youth Engagement
Ezeogidi also announced a monthly business support initiative targeted at petty women traders, and the launch of a free medical outreach across the local government area. To foster youth development and recreation, his administration will organize a sports competition, with the winning team walking away with a ₦2 million cash prize.
Nnewi-South Resort Centre in View
Perhaps the most ambitious project on the list is the planned construction of the Nnewi-South Resort Centre in Ukpor, envisioned as a hub for tourism, recreation, and local economic stimulation.
Driving Progress with Purpose
Hon. Ezeogidi reaffirmed his commitment to delivering life-enhancing projects that address the immediate needs of residents while laying the foundation for long-term growth.
“Nnewi-South is on the path of rapid transformation. These projects are not just promises; they are realities aimed at improving the quality of life for our people,” he said.
With this comprehensive work plan, the chairman has once again underscored his administration’s focus on sustainable development, security, healthcare, empowerment, and infrastructure—setting a strong pace for grassroots governance in Anambra State.
