Chinua Achebe’s Son, Chidi Wins Global Award In Medicine And Science

Dr. Chidi Chike Achebe, son of Nigeria’s prolific writer Chinua Achebe has won the John and Samuel Bard Award in Medicine and Science.

Leon Botstein, the President of Bard College said that “The John and Samuel Bard Award is named for the two 18th-century physicians, father and son, whose descendant, John Bard, founded the college. The award honours scientists whose achievements demonstrate the breadth of concern and depth of commitment that characterized these pioneer physicians.”

The Nigerian-American medical doctor has been in the medical field for about 25 years.

Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York will decorate Achebe with the award on May 27 2022. The institution has found him deserving of the height thanks to the humanitarian works and services he does in the health sector.

Achebe is the Chief Executive Officer of African Integrated Development Enterprise (AIDE), a firm that works to bring international organizations under an umbrella to foster the growth of Africa.

He is not only a medical practitioner, but is also a scholar. He had his undergraduate studies at Brad College before proceeding to Dartmouth Medical School where he qualified as a Doctor of Medicine. He went to Harvard School of Public Health and obtained a Master’s degree in Public Health. He holds another Master’s degree in Business Administration from Yale University School of Management, Connecticut.

The 55-year old has headed the Harvard Street Neighborhood Health Center in Boston. He was once a medical director at Whittier Street Health Center, also in Boston. He was an assistant Professor in Tufts University School of Medicine, a privately-owned medical institute in Massachusetts, United States of America.

His fight for equality in the health sector has also been recognized. It has earned him the Martin Luther King Jr. Social Justice Award.
