ANAOCHA, ANAMBRA STATE — In a vibrant celebration of youth empowerment and community progress, Anaocha Local Government Area marked a significant milestone on Tuesday, May 14, 2025, as 500 young people were officially empowered following their successful completion of the Anaocha Skill Empowerment Programme.

The event, held in the heart of the local government headquarters, brought together a cross-section of society including political leaders, traditional rulers, community stakeholders, and excited family members to witness what many described as a “turning point” in the lives of Anaocha youths.

The programme, which began in early 2024 and concluded at the end of that year, offered intensive training across various vocational and digital skill areas. Participants were assessed to ensure they met the standards required to begin the journey of entrepreneurship and self-reliance.

Ejike Okechukwu , applauded the initiative, noting that youth empowerment remains a critical tool in reducing crime and unemployment in the region.“Today is not just about certificates; it’s about a future redefined by hard work and vision. These 500 young men and women are no longer waiting for opportunities—they’ve created one for themselves,” he said.

Also present at the event were key government officials, including the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor; Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike; Commissioner for Youth Development, Dr. Patrick Aghamba; as well as numerous Presidents-General of town unions and community leaders.

Their presence underlined the importance of the empowerment initiative as part of a broader strategy to promote social stability and economic inclusion in the local government area.

Hon. Romanus Ibekwe the working Mayor of anaocha on his welcome addresss mentioned that was focused on practical, in-demand skills such as ICT, tailoring, catering, hairdressing, automobile repairs, agriculture, and more. Organizers say the programme was designed not only to teach trades but to instill confidence, discipline, and vision in the youth.“Our goal is to ensure that the youth of Anaocha are equipped with both the skillsets and mindsets required for national development,”
“When young people are engaged, the community thrives. It’s as simple as that.”

One of the beneficiaries, Chinedu Okoye, who trained in fashion design, expressed his joy at the opportunity.“This programme changed my life. I now have my own sewing machine and clients. I’m grateful to everyone who made this possible.”

In what was both a celebration and a call to action, stakeholders reiterated their shared vision for a “Greater Anaocha,” where youth development takes center stage in policy and planning.

Commissioner for Youth, Dr. Patrick Aghamba, noted:“Empowering our youth is not just good policy—it is the right thing to do. We must continue on this path if we are serious about building a peaceful and productive society.”

Organizers confirmed that the next phase of the Skill Empowerment Programme will soon be announced, with plans to expand the initiative to reach even more young people across Anaocha.
