ANAMBRA STATE’S FISH FARMING INDUSTRY

Fish farming is a branch of agriculture that deals with the rearing and selling of fish in commercial quantity for profit. The popularization of catfish joints and fish pepper soup joints has moved the focus of the people from dairy products like chicken, and turkeys to aquaculture products, especially catfish. To run a fishery business in the state may be a little tasking but with 4 to 5 million nairas, you are good to start it.
The process of fish farming is not as stressful as crop farming, though it has its tiring moments. To run an aquaculture business, the following steps must be followed;
- First, you must get land to build the fish pond
- Next start building the fish pond. This part requires constructive thinking and building so it is necessary you invite an expert to handle it.
- Select and purchase the type of fish you want to rear.
- Start feeding the fishes
- Clean the tanks and change the water constantly
- Harvest the fishes
- Market the fishes
Fishery and aquaculture is a lucrative business that has raised thousands of youths and elderly from poverty. The boom of this business in Anambra State can be said to be massive as it has caught the eye of the Government and is now used as a tool to eradicate youths from poverty. In 2019, the Government took interest in the business and established fish production sites in the three senatorial districts of the state. This effort was arranged to reposition and revitalize aquaculture to transform it into an attractive source of livelihood for the citizens. The managing director of fishery Mr. Emeka Iloghalu, the Managing Director of Fishery and Aquaculture Business Development Agency confirmed that the government of Anambra state plans on building reliable and credible fishery businessmen and women in Anambra state.
Now in 2022, the Anambra state government is once again tapping into the blessings the fishery business provides. It was announced that the government plans to create a fishery village. They are looking into refurbishing the industry and making it attractive to investors. Currently, Anambra state is said to be one of the beneficiaries of the 48 million euros budgeted for the 12 countries participating in the Fish For Africa, Caribbean, and Pacific Programme (Fish4ACP) organized by the United Nations. This happened as a result of the state’s innovative and creative schemes that turned the aquaculture business into an industrious sector.
Asides from the Government’s involvement in the growth and development of aquaculture in Anambra state. With hundreds of citizens actively participating in this lucrative business, they would, by all means, succeed in creating a livelihood through the support and sponsors from the Government and international bodies.
