Residents of Awka can now breathe a sigh of relief as the Anambra State Police Command has taken decisive action against a notorious robbery gang terrorizing Club Road, popularly known as Abakiliki Street.

In the early hours of March 18, 2025, police operatives from the Special Anti-Cult Unit, Enugwu-Ukwu, stormed an uncompleted building on Onwurah Street, Awka, and arrested Chibuike Ozoekwem (22) and Favour Patrick (19). Their arrest follows increased reports of phone snatching and armed robbery in the area.

During the operation, officers recovered:
🔹 One pump-action gun
🔹 Sixteen expended cartridges
🔹 A battle axe
🔹 Two suspected stolen phones

A breakthrough came when one of the victims identified one of the recovered phones. She recounted how, on the night of March 13, 2025, she was robbed at gunpoint by four men along Club Road. “I was terrified. They took everything, including my phone. Seeing my phone again is a miracle,” she said.

The police are now intensifying their investigation to track down the remaining gang members. Authorities have assured the public that once the investigation is complete, the suspects will face justice in court.

This operation is part of the security measures introduced by Commissioner of Police CP Ikioye Orutugu, aimed at making Anambra safer for residents. The police urge citizens to stay vigilant and report suspicious activities to help rid the state of crime.
