Anambra Assembly Passes Bill to Establish ‘Agunechemba’ Security Outfit

The Anambra State House of Assembly has enacted a significant bill to establish the ‘Anambra State Agunechemba’ security outfit, aimed at improving internal security and addressing crime throughout the state.
During a plenary session on Thursday, the bill moved seamlessly through its first, second, and third readings, leading to its approval.
Speaker Somtochukwu Udeze praised the lawmakers for their commitment to tackling the state’s security issues. He also recognized Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his steadfast dedication to ensuring Anambra remains safe and free from crime.
Lawmakers stated that the main goal of the ‘Agunechemba’ security outfit is to bolster security initiatives and combat criminal activities across all 21 local government areas in Anambra State.
The new security framework will function at three levels—community, local government, and state—with the state command acting as the central authority overseeing all operations.
Majority Leader and Ekwusigo Constituency representative, Ikenna Ofodeme, emphasized the outfit’s importance in gathering intelligence and preventing crime.
“Anambra is not a place for crime or insecurity. The ‘Agunechemba’ outfit will provide crucial intelligence on criminal activities and take proactive steps to prevent crime throughout the state,” Ofodeme remarked.
He also pointed out that the security unit would concentrate on addressing significant threats such as kidnapping, banditry, drug abuse, cultism, armed robbery, and other violent offenses.
Other lawmakers, including Jude Ngobili (Ihiala Constituency One), Ejike Okechukwu (Anaocha Constituency Two), and Anayo Okpaleke (Aguata Constituency One), shared similar views, highlighting the initiative’s importance in protecting lives and property in Anambra.
The bill is scheduled to take effect on Friday, January 17, 2025, representing a crucial advancement in enhancing security measures within the state.
