Umunze, Orumba South LGA — Residents of Umunze community in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State were thrown into panic in the early hours of Thursday following a violent attack on a local vigilante office by yet-to-be-identified gunmen.
According to reports culled from the popular Facebook page ‘For The Love Of Anambra’, the assailants stormed the premises of the vigilante operatives at dawn, shooting indiscriminately and causing widespread destruction.
Eyewitnesses say the hoodlums set fire to no fewer than five operational vehicles and torched sections of the building housing the vigilante team. The confrontation reportedly escalated into a gun duel, during which one of the security operatives sustained a fatal injury.
“The hoodlums invaded the premises and opened fire. There was panic everywhere. The vigilante tried to resist them, but unfortunately, one of them was fatally injured,” a resident who witnessed the attack said.
Confirming the incident, the spokesman of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, stated that a Police-led Joint Security Force had since taken control of the area. He assured the public that efforts were underway to restore normalcy and track down the perpetrators.
This incident adds to growing concerns about the rising spate of violent attacks across the state. Many residents and community stakeholders have decried the recurring acts of brutality, calling on government and security agencies to intensify efforts to safeguard lives and property.
“Are we not tired of all these barbaric acts?” a concerned Anambra resident posted online. “Violence never breeds prosperity—it only fosters backwardness, fear, and instability.”
As investigations continue, the people of Umunze and indeed all of Anambra are hoping for swift justice and renewed peace in their communities.
